Do you have a primary dental qualification from the European Economic Area (EEA)?
If so, then your Dental qualifications from your degree will be recognised in the UK allowing you to work as a dentist straight away:
1. It is necessary for you to submit an application to the General Dental Council (GDC) for registration as a dentist in order to practice in the United Kingdom.
2. Subsequently, we will conduct a video call to discuss your preferred location for work in the UK and to understand the specific type of role and area of dentistry that interests you. This will be an opportunity for you to pose any questions you may have.
3. Following this, we will engage with our network of Dental Partners throughout the UK to identify the ideal position for you.
4. You will then participate in an interview with the Dental Partner.
5. A formal job offer will be extended to you.
6. If you are moving to the UK, our partners will assist you in applying for a sponsorship visa (if necessary), establishing a bank account, and ensuring you are well-prepared for your new life in the UK.
7. Upon the completion of all the aforementioned steps, you will commence your new position at the chosen practice. During your initial week, you will participate in a practice orientation, allowing you to familiarize yourself with your new colleagues. Additionally, as part of your mentorship program, you will benefit from continuous support provided by the local regional clinical team, which includes the clinical support manager and the clinical director.
NHS
If you would like to work for the NHS, you will also be required to complete a mentorship which will take around 12 months to complete. For this you will need to apply for your NHS Performer Number. You will need to provide a number of documents, and for a panel or dental advisors to approve your application. This can take a while but wherever possible we will offer you the opportunity to work in a practice seeing private patients.
Do you have an overseas qualification from outside of the EEA?
If so, then your Dental qualifications from your degree aren't immediately recognised in the UK; however with a few simple steps you can soon practice as a Dental professional in the UK:
1. It is essential to possess a suitable proficiency in English prior to taking the ORE, which must be demonstrated by completing the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination.
2. You will be required to take the ORE; further information can be found at the following link: https://www.gdc-uk.org/registration/overseas-registration-exam/applying-for-ore.
3. Upon successfully passing the ORE, you will qualify to register with the GDC, enabling you to practice in the UK.

1. Initially, it is necessary to submit an application. Upon successful completion of this process, you will be included in the ORE candidate list.
2. An application processing fee of £96 is required when you fill out the online application form.
3. Prior to commencing the application process, it is essential to familiarise yourself with the applicant requirements outlined in the sections below. Additionally, reviewing the application details for the ORE is advisable.
4. It is also important to read the examination rules, policies, and procedures to ensure you understand the prerequisites before applying. Furthermore, consulting the student fitness to practise guidance, which delineates the expected standards of conduct, may be beneficial. Currently, there is a very high demand for available places. The processing time for an application is approximately 60 working days. Given the substantial number of candidates seeking to secure a place, you may encounter challenges in doing so over the next 12 months or longer. Candidates holding refugee status are entitled to request priority access for booking up to two attempts at Part 1 and two attempts at Part 2 of the ORE. Eligible individuals should review our guidance and reach out to us to discuss their circumstances if they wish to utilise this policy. It is not necessary to provide evidence of refugee status during the application process. The GDC will furnish information on how to access priority booking once you are listed as a candidate. Additionally, you may wish to contact other organisations that offer support.
Fees for applying and sitting the ORE
1. An application processing fee of £96 is required. Further details regarding the application process and the related fee can be found in our guide on applying for the ORE.
2. Additionally, examination fees must be paid each time you schedule a sitting for the ORE.
The current fees for examinations are as follows:
ORE Part 1: £584
ORE Part 2: £4,235
Retakes for medical emergencies: £566.
Requirements for applicants
1. A minimum of 1,600 hours of clinical experience is required, during which you must have directly treated patients in a dental setting. This experience must be detailed in your application. The hours should encompass appropriate investigations and the administration of dental treatments. You may accumulate this clinical experience through various avenues, including your dental degree, post-qualification practice, and temporary registration. However, time spent observing or assisting other dentists or dental students in diagnosis, treatment planning, or treatment cannot be counted.
2. It is essential to ensure that you possess the comprehensive clinical skills and knowledge necessary to successfully undertake a series of assessments prior to applying. The Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) is structured around the learning outcomes expected of UK dentists and aims to evaluate your ability to practice dentistry safely. You must be able to demonstrate your competence, skills, and knowledge across various facets of dentistry, as well as your conduct, performance, and adherence to ethical standards as outlined in the Standards for the dental team. Your likelihood of passing the ORE will be enhanced by recent clinical dentistry experience, rather than solely depending on preparatory courses. Please note that we do not provide quality assurance or endorsements for any ORE training or preparatory courses, nor do we offer recommendations for such courses.
3. You are required to provide proof of your proficiency in the English language with your application. Acceptable forms of evidence include: an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) certificate at the requisite level, a recent primary dental qualification that was taught and assessed in English, a recent successful completion of a language test for registration with a regulatory authority in a country where English is the primary and native language, or recent practice experience in a country where English is the primary and native language. For more comprehensive information regarding English language requirements, please refer to the detailed guidance available.
4. We do not anticipate that you will have prior knowledge of the NHS or the cultural context in the UK, except for how these factors may influence your patient treatment.
